Our Mission and History

The San Juan Benefit Players is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.   The San Juan Benefit Players was organized in 2006 to:

  • Foster the growth and appreciation of diverse performing arts in our community.

  • Provide performance opportunities for playwrights, directors, actors and musicians.

  • Allow diverse components of our community to enjoy, experience and appreciate quality performing arts.

  • Assist needy members of the community by staging charitable benefits.

  • Foster education opportunities for children of the community.

The Benefit Players plans to produce four to five plays every year, and the Performing Arts Society of the Benefit Players plans to host a musical performance each month, generally on the third Monday of the Month.  The Benefit Players also intend to generate financial support for members of the island community facing extraordinary medical expenses. In order to do this, however, the Benefit Players need your financial support.

 Our Achievements

Since its formation in 2006, the Benefit Players has presented more than 80 performances.  The plays presented include:

  • Don’t Dress For Dinner
  • Last of the Red Hot Lovers
  • Arsenic and Old Lace
  • The Fantasticks
  • Endgame

  • Eclectica
  • Guarding Erica
  • Summer Repertory
  • many shorter plays

“Summer Repertory Theatre” provided an opportunity for local writers to present their original works. It also allowed new and more experienced directors and actors and local schoolchildren to participate in the Benefit Players events. Eight of our actors during the 2007-2008 season were students from the local middle and high school.

The
Performing Arts Society, part of the Benefit Players structure, began presenting a diverse
range of musical concerts in January 2007. The Society’s presentations have included chamber music, piano recitals, opera, a brass quintet, guitar, song recitals, ballet folklorico and numerous other events.

The Benefit Players
Do Not Charge
for Admission

Attendance at events is by donations to allow everyone to appreciate performing arts, regardless of their means.

Charitable Benefits

The Benefit Players is a 100% local volunteer group and does not pay any salaries or performance fees. After covering basic costs such as rent, utilities, royalties, and necessary production costs, excess donations are available for benefit purposes.

The Benefit Players have used funds raised at several events to benefit needy members of the community, primarily those with special medical needs.

If you know of a member of the community who is in need of financial assistance, particularly for medical emergencies, please contact one of our board members with the details, or e-mail us.

Contributions

Fundraising is an essential part of the Benefit Players concept. Fundraising dollars are used to cover basic operating costs, allowing a greater portion of event donations to be used for benefit purposes. The San Juan Benefit Players is a 501(c)3 organization. All contributions are tax deductible.

We ask you to contribute to the Benefit Players fundraising efforts to allow the Benefit Players to continue providing quality performing arts events for the diverse benefit of the community in general. Send contributions to PO Box 867, Friday Harbor WA 98250.

The Benefit Players have created six categories of financial support. While donations in any amount are always welcome, we urge you to give generously.

o Donor                           $250-499
